THE BENEFITS OF SOAKING IN THE HOT TUB IN WINTER
Winterizing your spa for the season—draining it, cleaning it, and protecting it from the effects of freezing weather—can be a complicated and time-consuming procedure. In many cases, it’s better for the health of your hot tub to keep it running. Plus, in addition to enjoying the everyday benefits of your home spa, you’ll get to experience some perks unique to the winter months:
- Staying Warm Outside in the Cold. In freezing weather, a soak in your home spa allows you to spend time outside in warmth and comfort, instead of huddling indoors or shivering in the cold air.
- Cold-Weather Hydrotherapy. When your muscles and joints are cold, you’re more likely to pull or strain them during physical activity. In chilly temperatures, soaking in your hot tub before exercise can help warm you up and prepare your body for a safer workout, while soaking after a workout can relax and soothe aching muscles or stiff limbs. Learn more about integrating your hot tub with exercise in this guide.
- Winter Socializing and Celebrations. The winter holidays are a perfect time to enjoy the company of close friends and family. Your hot tub can serve as a unique and memorable site for a festive winter gathering.
10 TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR HOT TUB IN WINTER
During the winter, follow these tips to protect your hot tub, keep yourself safe, and enhance your enjoyment:
- Invest in a Good Cover. Make sure your hot tub cover is well-insulated and has a tight-fitting seal. A high-quality cover in good condition will help your hot tub maintain a constant high temperature, even when the weather is frightful.
- Monitor the Water Level. Check your water level frequently and add more as necessary. If the water level falls too low in cold weather, the components may freeze, which could damage your hot tub.
- Keep the Water Clean. Make sure you clean and maintain your water and filters according to your usual schedule. Simple problems can become more complicated to fix in subzero weather.
- Change Your Water Early. If your tub will be due for a scheduled water change during winter, it’s a good idea to shift it to earlier in the year. Changing water while the outside temperatures are low can be particularly challenging, as there’s a risk of water freezing and damaging your spa.
- Turn Down the Jets. Use the jets to a lesser extent than you would in other seasons, and don’t forget to turn them off when not in use. The jets work by blowing air into the water, which can lower the temperature.

- Be Smart About Soak Times. The longer you stay in your spa, the higher your body temperature climbs. While it may be tempting to linger in the comforting warmth of your hot tub when the outside air is cold, try to limit your soak time to about twenty minutes Moving from extreme heat to extreme cold can place dangerous stress on your body.
- Stay Hydrated. It’s always important to stay hydrated when you’re using your hot tub. During the winter, you may want to drink warm or room-temperature beverages while soaking to keep yourself hydrated while combating the cold. Since alcohol can increase the effects of dehydration, it’s best to abstain from drinking alcoholic beverages in your spa.
- Have a Plan for Retreat. Cold weather can be dangerous, particularly when you’re wet and wearing a bathing suit. At the conclusion of your soak, when you must leave the protective warmth of your spa and face the icy winter air, make sure to immediately shield yourself from the cold. Keep a bathrobe and shoes or sturdy slippers nearby, and get indoors as quickly as possible after leaving your hot tub.
- Vacation Without Worry. If your winter plans involve travel, rest assured your hot tub will be fine without you. Consider adding Connextion
from Hot Spring® Spas, a subscription-based service that will remotely monitor your hot tub and alert you and your dealer to any potential issues, no matter where you are in the world. If problems arise, your dealer can arrange to have them fixed without disrupting your vacation.
- Enhance Your Outdoor Sanctuary. Use accessories to add warmth and comfort to your outdoor hot tub environment in the winter. Consider adding heating lamps, or a towel warmer, or maybe simply a weatherproof rug to protect bare feet from the frozen ground. Just make sure all electrical devices are either battery-operated or are placed far enough away from your hot tub to avoid any possible risk of electrocution from contact with water.
If you’re still debating whether to keep your hot tub running all winter long, it may help to know how much energy your spa is likely to use in cold weather. For any questions you may have about winter hot tub use please call the or email us Hot Spring Spas. They’ll be able to help you better understand your model and its known performance specifications.

The Freshwater Salt System is a great tool that can be used on all Highlife and Limelight Collection spas. This easy to use salt water system completely eliminates the constant worry of keeping spa water clean, clear and sanitized. On top of that, it will last for a whole year! With the addition of just a little salt in your spa water, this system generates chlorine automatically. You’ll spend less time measuring and adding chemicals, and more time enjoying your hot tub. This exclusive system makes spa ownership easier than ever before by removing the guesswork and trouble behind water care maintenance. Here are some of the reasons that the Freshwater Salt System is the best choice in water care.

Water Conservation
At the leading edge of the FreshWater Salt System’s innovation is water conservation. The trend toward conservation is prevalent as ever, and water conservation is no exception to it. To remain a worthwhile industry more has to be done to remove the stigma of hot tubs as water-wasters. With the Freshwater Salt System, fewer chemicals are needed, and the water stays cleaner for much longer. Clean spa water lasts 12 months before it needs to be drained and refilled. This is a much more affordable option for saltwater, so more spa owners can take advantage of this opportunity to conserve.
Titanium Cartridge
The low-cost titanium cartridge works with salt to generate chlorine that will keep your water clean, looking great and feeling more relaxed with no harsh odors. The disposable titanium cartridge lasts for four months, is accessible from the bar top, does not require any extra maintenance and can be replaced easily in seconds. To get started, the dealer just installs the components from the start-up kit. After that, the spa owner tests the water and adjusts output settings every 10 days as prompted by the display on the spa. The cartridges get replaced every four months, and the water only needs to be drained once a year, it’s that simple!
Affordable and Easy
Similar to ACE cartridges, but at a lower cost, the titanium cartridge in the system generates sanitizer from salt without giving off the harsh chlorine feel or odor. This keeps the water clean, clear and feeling softer. Normally, the cartridge requires no maintenance or cleaning. If run outside of hardness parameters, the cell may scale but can still be easily cleaned. The low-cost, integrated and in-line design benefits of the FreshWater Salt System make salt water spa ownership more attractive and accessible than ever. With its affordability, easy maintenance and water saving solutions, the reason to choose a Hot Spring spa with the FreshWater Salt System is clear. This system makes for the most affordable chlorine-generating salt system that allows you to work as little as possible, leaving you with even more time to enjoy your spa.
Simple Cartridge Replacement
After four months of use, or when the cartridge stops producing sanitizer, the cartridge can be changed in a matter of seconds from the bar top. There is no need to drain the spa water, unplug any wires or call the dealer. Replacement cartridges are sold in packs of three, giving spa owners an easy and affordable one-year supply of water care.

Integrated In-Line Design
The FreshWater System works with the spa control panel and plumbing making for a convenient and reliable overall operation. No unpleasant added components on the spa with this system! The instructions on the control panel clearly indicate when the salt system needs attention and tells you what direct steps to take, removing all of the guesswork. Keeping up with the maintenance of hot tubs with the Freshwater Salt System could not be any easier!

We’ve just skimmed the surface on all of the amazing benefits that the FreshWater System has to offer! If you want to learn more about the benefits a FreshWater System could bring you, contact us!

A large,
seven-seat hot tub holds around 450 gallons of water. That might seem like a lot of water, but when you consider the fact that an average person sends around
100 gallons per day down their drains as a result of household activities, it’s really not.

HYDROTHERAPY – WHAT IS IT?
In its basic form, hydrotherapy is a type of warm or cold water massage that helps relieve pain. Hydrotherapy uses the temperature and pressure of water to offer relief from symptoms. While hydrotherapy can take many forms, often it uses under water jetted massage (as in a hot tub).
WHEN WAS HYDROTHERAPY INVENTED?
Hydrotherapy dates back to Ancient Greece. Hippocrates documented his early use of hydrotherapy and referred to the treatment as hydropathy. The Greeks were not the only people to use hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy was also used by the Ancient Chinese, Roman, and Egyptian civilizations. Hydrotherapy gained popularity over time and came to the United States in the 1840s. Hydrotherapy has evolved in the United States, and now encompasses many different forms. People love hydrotherapy so much that they even started using it to treat their dogs. Today there are even canine hydrotherapy facilities across the country.
HOW IS HYDROTHERAPY PRACTICED?
There are many techniques that people use to enjoy hydrotherapy benefits. A simple and common technique is the use of a cold or hot compress for muscle pain, headaches, or fevers. Wraps, like compresses, involve wrapping a water soaked sheet around a part of the body. A second layer of towels or hot blankets added to the wrap can treat anything from a fever to skin disorders. Hot tubs and spas are a huge part of hydrotherapy practices and offer many benefits. The hot water helps relieve sore muscles, and sports-related injuries. It may provide temporary relief for arthritis symptoms. The jet streams help ease other types of symptoms, including emotional or mental stress. Hot tubs are a great way to enjoy hydrotherapy benefits at home. When a person’s body is completely submerged in water, they have a weightless feeling.. This relief from the pressure of gravity gives muscles and joints a respite from pain. Exercising in water also takes this concept of weightlessness and applies it to activity. Water based exercise reduces pressure on joints and muscles.
WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF HYDROTHERAPY?
At its most basic level, hydrotherapy can help relieve stress and assist people to relax and let go of worry. Hydrotherapy also reduces aches and pains including sore muscles, and joint stiffness.
Some hydrotherapy benefits may include:
-
increase blood flow in the body
-
reduce aches and pains of sore muscles
-
relieve joint stiffness
-
ease common cold symptoms (clearing airways)
-
assist with issues related to hypertension
-
relief from headaches
Hydrotherapy is a long, storied practice that can assist people in many ways. One of the easiest ways to practice hydrotherapy is to bring a hot tub into your own home and use it daily. Hot tubs are one of the most common ways to reap the wellness benefits of hydrotherapy!

Does your family love camping but you can’t find the time to get away? Or does the thought of loading up the car with all those supplies for a quick weekend stop you in your tracks? Why not create your own backyard camping trip that the kids (and you) will never forget?
The first thing you need is a tent big enough to fit the entire family. If you need to upgrade your accommodations or add a tent to your supplies,
here are some great and affordable options for you to consider.
Stock up on easy-to-cook outdoor foods that the entire family can prepare together. And, of course, you have to prepare for the s’mores adventure! Check out 101 stress free camping foods to cook,
So, let’s recap:
Food
Lodging
S’mores

Now what?
To keep the kids entertained we would suggest some backyard games like bocce ball, washer toss, bag toss, and Wiffle ball. Use this as an excuse to add some new yard games to your supply like giant Jenga or Connect Four.
Some of these games are great for the parents as well, but you should try to carve out some time to relax. Installing a hammock is a great way to go.
Once the sun has set and the last s’more has been devoured, it’s time for some evening entertainment. Drape a white cloth in the darkest part of the yard and project a movie for all to enjoy. Better yet, just add water to create your own float-n-flick experience. Hot tubs are a great way to pull the family together for a memorable, relaxing experience on any budget and any backyard size. With plug’n’play models, all you need is a standard outlet to heat the water. No special wiring or electrical configuration required! Plus, the hot tub will be enjoyed well beyond the weekend camping trip.
Don’t have a hot tub yet? You will be surprised how affordable it can be. Check out our Freeflow Spas to learn more. Evaluate your options–from 2-person hot tubs to a 7-seater large enough for your entire family to enjoy together. You can even schedule a test soak!
Hot tubs can even be financed for low monthly payments that are way less than a weekend trip to the campground. Plus, you will benefit from the stress-reducing, family bonding, and personal escape of your very own hot tub any time you want.
Happy Camping (and Hot Tubbing!)
